Proxmox Manager Series Post 4: DNS-01 certificate provisioning

Certificate provisioning becomes unnecessarily fragile when every provider, challenge and service is configured manually. DNS-01 is particularly useful for infrastructure automation because it can validate names without exposing an HTTP challenge endpoint and can support wildcard certificates where appropriate.

Deterministic certificate flow

Request certificate → Create DNS challenge → Provider integration → Verify challenge → Issue certificate → Deploy certificate → Clean up challenge

The provider-specific implementation should sit behind an adapter. The deployment logic should care about the requested hostname and certificate policy, not which vendor-specific API field happens to carry the TXT record.

Security requirements

Certificate automation only improves security when credential handling is treated seriously:

Operational objective

The desired outcome is not “automatic certificates at any cost”. It is a reproducible certificate lifecycle that operators can inspect, retry and audit without reconstructing provider configuration from memory.

LinkedIn-ready summary

DNS-01 certificate provisioning should not be configuration roulette.

Request the certificate. Create the DNS challenge. Resolve the provider integration. Verify. Issue. Deploy. Clean up.

The Proxmox Manager architecture treats that as one deterministic workflow, while provider-specific APIs remain behind adapters and credentials stay narrowly scoped.

That makes certificate management part of infrastructure state instead of another collection of fragile screenshots and copied API tokens.
